Introduction
- The founding process of the Euskaltzaindia began in 1918 and ended in 1919. For further information go to Foundation of Euskaltzaindia and History of Euskaltzaindia sections.
- Euskaltzaindia is the official institution in charge of Euskera or Basque language. The institution conducts studies on the language and has the task of safekeeping; it is also the entity that establishes the rules to standardise the language.
- Therefore, since its inception, Euskaltzaindia works on the corpus of the language, but it also looks after its social status. For this reason, the Academy has always had two sections (Philological and Tutelary) as part of its activity.
- In the years 2018-2019, Euskaltzaindia celebrates its centenary and would like to take this opportunity to reflect together with Basque society on the path that has been walked and set the challenges for the future.
Goals
The Centenary of Euskaltzaindia has two main objectives:
- On one hand, it wants to socialize the work of Euskaltzaindia in these hundred years and focus on the work that has been done; without falling into self-justification and self-indulgence, it wants to account its successes and accept the work that remains to be done or the mistakes made. Moreover, the Academy wants to present its plans (needs of the speakers and users) and strategic lines for the future of its two sections.
- Lead by the institution, Euskaltzaindia wants to structure the society around the Basque language and culture, above diversity of opinions. The main objective is to give a new boost to the revitalization of Euskera for the next two decades.
Initiatives
Between September 2018 and October 2019, Euskaltzaindia is organising a series of seminars and academic publications, artistic productions and cultural works, institutional meetings, and initiatives of many other areas throughout all the territories of the Basque language (if possible, in collaboration with other public and social entities).
