v. de la pr. de Guipuzcoa, dioc. de Pamplóna. Está situada entre dos encumbradas montañas, y confina por n. con la villa de Elgoibar á distancia de una legua, por e. con la de Azcoitia, por s. con la de Vergara, de la qual dista una legua, y por o. con la de Eybar, extendiendo su junsdiccion 2 leguas en circunferencia. En las juntas generales y particulares de provincia ocupa el 15.º asiento á la mano izquierda del corregidor, y vota en 23.º lugar con 26 fuegos. Tiene su casa de ayuntamiento con una decente fachada de piedra sillar construida sobre 3 arcos, plaza pública, posada y 2 fuentes de agua dulce cerca del cuerpo de la villa, llamadas Aranecoa y Recalde: en su término 4 molinos y varios arroyos, entre los quales se señalan el de Ozteguieta y el del valle de S. Andres. El rio Deva, baxa desde la villa de Salinas, la atraviesa y surte de truchas, anguílas, loinas, barbos y peces. Mandó fundar esta villa el rey de Castilla D. Alonso XI, ordenando que los hombres de Marquina, así se llamaba antiguamente el valle en que está situada, que habitaban en Soraluce, y los que moraban en el campo de Herlaivia hiciesen esta poblacion, mandándola llamar Plasencia, y que la cercasen é hiciesen en ella iglesia: concedióla sus términos y el fuero de Logroño por privilegio despachado en el real de Algeciras á 15 de octubre era 1381 año 1343, siendo merino mayor en Guipuzcoa D. Beltran Velez de Guevara, que con las gentes de la misma provincia se hallaba sirviendo al rey en el asedio de aquella plaza. Goza de jurisdiccion civil y criminal que exerce un alcalde ordinario: su escudo de armas es un castillo sostenido por 2 leones con varios trofeos militares. La poblacion consiste en 250 casas en el cuerpo de la villa, y 80 caseríos dispersos por el valle: los que habitan en éstos se dedican á la agricultura, y cogen trigo y maíz; pero tan poco, que apénas llega á lo que se necesita en una quarta parte del año. La misma escasez experimentan respecto de los frutos comunes en el país de manzana, castaña y nuez, y no es mas abundante la hortaliza: hay algo de ganado vacuno y lanar. Los vecinos de la villa, divididos en 4 gremios, chisperos, cañonistas, aparejeros y caxistas, se ocupan en su real fábrica de fusiles, escopetas y pistolas, igualmente que en las de Mondragon, Eybar y Elgoibar. La de Placencia tiene para su gobierno varios oficiales por el rey, veedor, contralor, gobernador, almacenero, y 4 exáminadores que reciben y prueban las armas entregadas por los oficiales. Tambien se hacen reloxes de bronce de sobremesa muy primorosos. Los montes de su jurisdiccion producen robles, hayas y nogales, y no faltan en ellos aves y animales de varias especies, liebres, raposos, erizos, topos, perdices, tordos, buytres, cuerbos y gavilanes. La iglesia parroquial, titulada santa María, es de piedra sillar, y tiene un retablo de estuco; está servida por 6 beneficiados, 4 de entera racion y 2 de media, cuya presentacion pertenece al cabildo eclesiástico de Fuenterrabía. Hay tambien un convento de monjas canónigas de S. Agustin, sujetas al obispo de Pamplona, y 6 ermitas, la de la Magdalena dentro de la villa, y fuera de ella las de santa Cruz, S. Andres, S. Estéban, S. Emeterio y nuestra Señora de Occiti. M.

No sabemos la razón de estas dos denominaciones ni tampoco si en realidad Tajonar y Cordovilla fueron a sustituir nombres anteriores. Sí sabemos, sin embargo, que esto sucedió con frecuencia a partir en general del siglo XII, al difundirse con una motivación conocida nombres como Placencia, Salvatierra, Segura o Villafranca, pero esto es en Navarra mucho más raro que en Guipúzcoa, Vizcaya e incluso Alava (Alegría, Labastida, Laguardia, Salvatierra). Hay, con todo, un ejemplo bien claro: Villafranca (383, 1260) por la antigua Alesues, Alisves. // A fin de cuentas, si la toponimia no es un marco inmutable, puesto que nada lo es en este mundo, su ritmo de cambio es muchísimo más lento y, sobre todo si nos atenemos a los nombres de lugar menor, constituye para la antroponimia un sistema de referencia suficientemente estable. No hay que olvidar, claro está, la dimensión vertical o social, siempre presente y poco sujeta a limitaciones geográficas, pero susceptible al mismo tiempo de ser fijada objetivamente gracias al contexto documental
