Den. oficial: Hermua [...] Etimol.: Según Mitxelena (1956: 170) procede del latín ĕremu o éremus, como el Ermua vizcaíno, étimo que ha dado en castellano yermo y en euskera eremu ‘desierto’, ‘extensión’, ‘término’, etc. Como dice el lingüista guipuzcoano (1984: 287), el topónimo ha sufrido la síncopa de la -e- interior a causa del acento heredado del modelo latino, griego en última instancia (Érmua). La -a final es el artículo vasco, y como tal desaparece en la declinación. // No se ve bien por qué se documenta a menudo con h-, que no parece, por su sistematismo, ser una cuestión meramente gráfica. Una solución puede ser pensar que ha habido un cruce con her- de herri ‘tierra’, ‘pueblo’. Véase la entrada Ergoiena [Se trata de un compuesto de herri ‘tierra’, ‘territorio’ en toponimia (cfr. Beterri, Euskal Herria ‘el territorio donde se habla el euskera’, Goierri, Iruñerria ‘La Cuenca de Pamplona’, Txorierri, etc.), her- en composición, más -goien ‘el / la más alta’ y el artículo -a. Hay otro Ergoiena, llamado en los alrededores Ergoienerri (Ergonerri), con un segundo -erri añadido seguramente cuando el primero ya no se sentía como tal, en Sakana (N), no lejos de la Ergoiena alavesa, y en un enclave geográfico bastante parecido. Además, y sin ánimo de ser exhaustivos, podemos señalar que Ergoien(a) designa barrios de Amezketa y Oiartzun (Ergoien aquí; véase Goikoetxea y Lekuona, 2007: 126). En Leitza (N) se ha convertido en Elgoien que se contrapone a Elbarren (de *Erbarren), nombres que distinguen la parte alta y la baja del pueblo (Olano, 2005: 75); en Ataun también hay Ergoen y Elbarrena (Mitxelena, 1956: 349). // El jesuita hernaniarra Agustín Kardaberatz escribe lo siguiente en 1761 (p. 17): «Eta Guraso, edo Curac diranean, nola ongui premia dan bezala, beren Eche, edo Ergoienetan (Erri chiquiai onela Araban deitcendiete) Dotrina eracatsi, ta confesatucodute? », es decir, y en lo que nos concierne ahora, se puede traducir como “en sus casas o ergoienas (a los pueblos pequeños en Álava les llaman así)”. // Ibisate (2008) concluye, tras considerar los datos recogidos por Azkue en su diccionario y los que aporta el DGV, que la información de Kardaberatz es acertada. Nosotros vemos, más bien, Ergoiena con la acepción de ‘tierra alta’, en el caso alavés en relación a Agurain, aunque la diferencia de altitud no sea muy marcada, como ocurre en el caso navarro de Ergoiena (Ergoienerri) respecto a localidades próximas (Etxarri Aranatz por ejemplo). // Para finalizar, queremos señalar que la h- inicial, y por lo tanto la aspiración que representa, se mantiene en este nombre hasta 1520 al menos, si bien hay testimonios anteriores que carecen de dicho grafema].
