2. Evaluation and publication processes

  • Euskera is Euskaltzaindia’s official publication and it has been published since 1920. The first issue of the year (known as bulletins) covers Euskaltzaindia’s academic work, and the second issue contains original research articles, book quotations and similar material relevant to the Academy's field of work. Issues are published within six months of the end of the year. In order to publish research articles, the Writing Council receives opinions from two external evaluators with guaranteed anonymity.

3. Languages

  • Original articles are published in any language used in the Basque Country’s academic sphere.

4. Introduction

  • At the beginning of the article, the author's credentials (university, research center, organization, etc.) and e-mail address will be established.
  • 1.5 line spacing will be used to write the text, and in order to provide clarification or corrections, works will be presented with writing on both sides of the page and with an indentation of 1.5 cm. Pages and footnotes will be detailed in consecutive lists.
  • Texts will have 12 point body.
  • Usual academic field fonts will be accepted (Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, etc.)
  • All sections and subsections of the article must be numbered in Arabic numerals and hierarchically: 1., 1.1., 1.1.1., 1.2., 1.2.1., 2., etc.
  • Loose words in other languages must be written in italics. Book titles and magazine names will also be written in italics.

5. Length

  • Articles, spaces excluded, should be no less than 30,000 characters, and no more than 60,000. Book quotations, spaces excluded, will be no less than 6,000 characters, and no more than 10,000.

6. Abstracts and keywords

  • Along with the research article, a summary (maximum of 500 characters) and keywords (maximum of six) will be submitted. Abstracts and keywords must be written in Basque and English. It goes without saying that if the article is written in a third language, the keywords and summary mentioned must be submitted in that language too.

9. Quotations

  • Short quotations. Those shorter than four lines will be included in the text, and will be the same size as the body of the text. Commas and inverted commas will follow this hierarchy: "xxxx" xxx 'xxx' xxx "xxx" xxx ". The full stop at the end of the quotation will be placed after the reference: “[...] Zaldibia continued ” (Intxausti 1999).
  • Long quotations. These will be given in separate passages; the font size will be 10.5, and, to distinguish it from regular text, indentation of 1.5 cm must be used on both sides. an intermediate blank line will be also be left before and after each such quotation. In such cases, final full stops will be placed before the reference: [...] Zaldibia continued. (Intxausti 1999)
  • The first line of the quotation should not be further indented than the line after it.
  • No blank lines can be inserted between paragraphs within quotations.
  • Unwritten sentences or parts of the sentences must be marked using square brackets and with ellipsis: [...]

10. References and notes

  • Efforts to limit the number of notes are encouraged. All references should, if possible, be included in the text, linking them to bibliography, which is usually provided at the end of the article, as follows: (Larramendi 1729), (Mitxelena 1961: 123).
  • When there is only one author, no comma is placed between the name and the year: (Villasante 1961).
  • When there are two authors, the two names are separated by semicolons: (Furet; Ozouf 1977). When referring to different books, for the sake of clarity, various other options will be used (Deumert and Vandenbussche 2003; Coupland, Kristiansen & Deumert 2011).
  • When there are more than three authors, the first name will be followed by et al. At the end, when all the references are listed, all authors must be mentioned.
