This doctoral thesis focuses on the use of Basque in two schools, with highly diverse pupils and in contexts that are not so favourable to learning Basque. To explore the interrelationship between local pupils and those of immigrant origin, we will concentrate on two main variables: a) the attitudes of members of the school communities analysed (focusing on Basque and multilingualism); and b) pupils' oral communication skills in Basque. Attention will be paid to the results obtained for these variables, and in particular to achievements and challenges. Appreciative Inquiry has been, as we explain below, the philosophical source that led us to further analyse the diagnosis in terms of its strengths and achievements.

This thesis is a creative attempt to broaden and improve the toolkit of Basque demolinguistics. In this essay, setting out from sociolinguistic knowledge of minority languages and taking its inspiration from international demolinguistic work, we have exhaustively and imaginatively researched the potential of the main three sets of statistics on the Basque language (HZ, HEKN and ISL) and what possibilities they offer for creating new options by implementing new indicators.

Euskaltzaindia has been a pioneer in the methodological development of the social history of languages. Euskaltzaindia's project Euskararen Historia Soziala (Social History of the Basque language) is the Academy's main project in this area of research. Our researchers have developed a new methodology and theoretical framework that the Academy wishes to share with researchers and interested parties around the world through the publication of the book Taxonomy proposal for the (historical) sociology of language research: A Basque Contribution (Euskaltzaindia 2024), edited by Mikel Zalbide and Lionel Joly.

This book goes beyond the use of Basque among young people in Navarre, because the problem is very similar in other provinces. The thoughts and opinions of experts working from very different perspectives and starting points are provided. Some of these experts report on the proposals and projects they are working on; others consider the importance of orality in normalising the use of Basque; teachers discuss how they deal with this aspect in the classroom, what approaches they use and what initiatives are being taken outside school, for children who have learnt Basque at school to have a Basque-speaking network outside school.

This book presents several pieces of work with the intention of exploring the sociolinguistic evolution of Donostia/San Sebastian. First, Lionel Joly Charrasse outlines the methodological model for studying the social history of languages, in particular the social history of Basque. The second chapter of the book sets out to highlight the main languages in Donostia/San Sebastian in the course of its history. In the third, Juan Madariaga Orbea, on the basis of his extensive research into the subject, describes the position of Basque in the city in the 19th century. Next, Koldo Larrañaga Elorza, after exhaustive research, presents the opinion, and above all the practice, of members of the Royal Basque Society of the Friends of the Country, the social élites of Gipuzkoa province, with regard to Basque. Then in chapter five, Olatz Altuna Zumeta and Maialen Iñarra Arregi report on the position of Basque at the beginning of the 21st century. In the final chapter, on the basis of the methodological model mentioned above, Mikel Zalbide Elustondo and Lionel Joly Charrasse explore the sociolinguistic evolution of Donostia over the last 250 years. All these pieces of work provide an overview of the sociolinguistic evolution of Donostia/San Sebastián, from both synchronic and diachronic points of view.

We are well into the 21st Century and the digital environment is, without a doubt, part of our lives by now. Artificial intelligence, and language technologies in particular, have entered our everyday, and the Basque language is no exception here. How can the digital environment help revitalize the standardization of Basque? With this main objective in mind, we set out to learn about the experiences of other languages, that of Euskaltzaindia itself, and that of Basque institutions.
