There is nothing new in the idea that just over two thousand years ago, when Romanisation began, the Basque language was unknown in much of Euskal Herria, the modern Basque Country. This idea is based on the set of place names of Indo-European origin to be found in eastern Álava province and the western part of Navarre. The question is whether the Hispano-Celtic names of villages on stones and altars from Álava and Navarre are sufficient to sustain the hypothesis that Basque was unknown throughout the western part of the Basque Country at the time of the change of era.
