The regular work of the Onomastics Commission is to deal with queries and jobs that come in through the Onomastic Service, to which end, in many cases, it has to undertake specific studies and reports. Many of these queries come from public institutions (essentially in relation to place names), and many others from the public (above all in relation to people's names and descriptions), as well as from businesses and associations. The Commission also has the job of settling doubts and dealing with queries in the onomastics field sent to it by professionals in different spheres (journalists, translators, writers, teachers, correctors, Basque experts and so on).
The Onomastics Commission also has specific responsibilities in the field of Basque anthroponymy and toponymy.
