A long-standing dream of Basque scholars and of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language is to create a map of dialects. Julio Urquijo was the first to express this intention, in 1918, and some years later, in 1921, the president of Euskaltzaindia, Resurrección María Azkue, presented to the general meeting of the Academy his plan to create Erizkizundi Irukoitza (the Triple Questionnaire). Different attempts were then made, and in 1980, when the Dialectology Commission was set up, it was not starting out from zero as its primary aim was to produce a language atlas.
