The primary function of the Grammar Commission is to work on Basque grammar.
First the Academy produced the grammatical series Euskal Gramatika: Lehen Urratsak (EGLU) (Basque Grammar: First Steps), which laid the initial foundations of the Euskaltzaindia grammar: the Grammar Commission published nine volumes in this series between 1985 and 2011 (EGLU 1-7, one annexe and a brief grammar of the simple sentence). After doing the work of cementing these first steps or principles, the Academy updated and completed the grammars, subsequently publishing Euskararen Gramatika (Basque Grammar) in 2021.
The commission is now preparing a condensed version of the Basque Grammar, as neighbouring language academies have done.
The commission also answers grammar queries through Euskaltzaindia's Jagonet language service.
